Recent Changes to Regulations Regarding Disposal at Sea

cover of publication

The Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA 1999) governs the disposal at sea of substances in Canada. In 2009 amendments were made to the three regulations governing disposal at sea. Changes were made to the Regulations Respecting Applications for Permits for Disposal at Sea to update and correct information on the permit application form. The Ocean Dumping Permit Fee Regulations (Site Monitoring) were amended to update references to CEPA 1999. Finally, the Disposal at Sea Regulations were modified to further define "the sea" in areas of transition between fresh and marine waters. Changes to administrative procedures for measuring dredged material volumes are also described.
