Solid Waste Management for Northern and Remote Communities: Planning and Technical Guidance Document

cover of publication

Communities in northern and remote regions face unique challenges in managing their municipal solid waste. Environment and Climate Change Canada, with input from territorial government representatives, key stakeholders, and subject matter experts, developed a voluntary guidance document on how to manage municipal solid waste in Canada's northern and remote communities. The document provides guidance on best practices for the planning, design, operation, and eventually, closure of existing or new municipal solid waste facilities. In addition, the document highlights high-, medium-, and lower-priority actions to reduce risks to human health and safety and prevent the releases of toxic substances to the air, water, and land.
