Archived - Environmental occurrences notification agreements

Pursuant to subsection 9(6) of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999, notice is hereby given that the Minister of the Environment and the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans have entered into an environmental occurrences notification agreement with the government of each of the following provinces and territories: Ontario, Manitoba, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Yukon and the Northwest Territories.

The purpose of these notification agreements is to establish a streamlined notification system and reduce duplication of effort for persons required to notify federal and provincial/territorial governments of an environmental emergency or environmental occurrence, such as an oil or chemical release.  Under these notification agreements, 24-hour authorities operating for the provinces and territories receive emergency or occurrence notifications and transfer this information to Environment Canada, which is essential for timely and effective oversight of the response, as may be warranted.
