Stakeholder Consultation on the Risk Management for 2-Methoxethanol - Thursday, November 18th, 2004

This is a follow-up to the multi-stakeholder meeting for 2-Methotoxyethanol (2-ME) held on January 28th, 2004. Environment Canada will be holding a consultation meeting for the development of regulations to control 2-ME and the associated socioeconomic impact statement. We are advising stakeholders of the date so that interested parties can plan accordingly.

The proposed date for the meeting is the afternoon of November 18th, 2004, in Toronto. If you would like to participate, please contact the undersigned before Friday, October 29th, 2004. A confirmation letter or e-mail including an agenda and additional information about the consultation meeting will be sent to you.

As with the last meeting, in order to ensure a balanced representation of all interests, and maintaining a manageable number of people, it may be necessary for large groups with similar interests and opinions to select a few nominees or an association as representative. If the inscription number indicates that there may be unbalanced representation, those concerned will be notified and given the opportunity to select the most appropriate representative(s) to fill the available spots. Please note there is no limit on the number of stakeholders that can receive the correspondence.

The minutes of the last meeting, the proposed risk management strategy and other pertinent information on 2-ME have been posted on the Management of Toxic Substances Web site of Environment Canada at the following address:
http://www.ec.gc.ca/toxiques-toxics/ (Note: Click on the "Substances" link to view many substances listed on Schedule 1 of CEPA 1999 such as 2-ME.)

As identified in the Risk Management Strategy, we will be proposing to amend the Prohibition of Certain Toxic Substances Regulations, 2003 by adding 2-ME. The intent will be to prohibit the manufacture, import and use of 2-ME and associated products.

If you have any questions, please contact the undersigned.

Sincerely,

Guy Gagné
