Service Description: Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and nitrogen monoxide (NO) are referred to as nitrogen oxides (NOx). NOx is a pollutant of air quality and can be harmful effects on health and the environment. The most common source of NOx in the troposphere are combustion processes for example from fossil fuel and forest fires. The recently launched satellite-based TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) from the European Space Agency can measure NO2 with excellent accuracy, coverage, and resolution. TROPOMI is a nadir-viewing (down-looking) spectrometer measuring reflected sunlight in the ultraviolet, visible, near-infrared, and shortwave infrared. From these solar spectra, the amount of various gases related to air quality and climate change can be estimated. The satellite is in a Sun-synchronous orbit with a daily local overpass time around 1:30pm.
