Projects

Integrated Stormwater Management Outreach         

  • Targeted outreach mechanisms to advance integrated stormwater management practices.

Water Quality Data Publishing and Reporting

  • Electronic water and aquatic quality data that can be used in data sharing systems developed for the internet.  

Georgia Basin Water Quality Index

  • Trend assessment monitoring in four Georgia Basin watersheds.

Fraser Estuary Water Quality Monitoring

  • Develop and apply an improved monitoring approach to assess the quality of the freshwaters passing through the Fraser River estuary into the Strait of Georgia.

Biological Stream Assessment

  • Assess and report on the status of streams and rivers in the Georgia Basin using the benthic invertebrate community structure as the indicator.

Developing Reference Condition Approaches for Rivers 

  • Models for aquatic biological communities based on the reference condition approach and verifies model stability by investigating temporal variability in the reference data base.  

Sensitive Ecosystem Inventory: Community Mapping           

  • Environment Canada contribution to the development of new titles in the Stewardship Series for the Stewardship Centre.

Species at Risk: Primer for Local Governments       

  • Updating and promoting the document developed for the Stewardship Centre

Information and Education Tools         

  • Promote environmental stewardship amongst the public by informing them of environmental issues and human impacts using the “Non-Point Source Pollution Model.”

Visibility Monitoring and Reporting     

  • Development of visibility monitoring framework and relationship between visibility and other pollutant concentrations.

Air Quality Report Against Objectives and Assess Progress

  • Assess and report on the effect of population and economic growth, emission management measures and meteorology on air quality.         

 Transboundary indicators         

  • Transboundary Indicators Report published.

Onsite Wastewater And Water Conservation            

  • Onsite wastewater treatment training and increased awareness and implementation of water conservation practices.

  • Environment Canada mandate content for ”Waterbucket” and related websites.                       

Ollie the Otter: Web-Based Watershed Outreach Tool

  • Web-based educational and outreach tool targeted at schools, the public and professionals in the development industry.       

Fraser Valley 2006 Obsolete Pesticide Collection    

  • Collection and safe disposal of obsolete agricultural pesticides.      

International Centre for Sustainable Cities: CitiesPLUS International Network

  • The International Centre for Sustainable Cities solicited the participation of 15 Canadian cities, federal departments, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, and the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives in the development of a network (+30 Network) to promote urban sustainability through the implementation of a long-term planning process.

  • Sensitive Ecosystem Inventory maps for Sunshine Coast.     

Powell River Sewage Alternatives Workshop           

  • Information transfer regarding traditional/alternative septic system options best suited to particular site and soil conditions as well as required maintenance.

Private Land Stewardship

  • Promote and encourage private land stewardship; create 10 ecological gifts in the Georgia Basin by 2007-2008.

Green Boating Guide       

  • Educational kits distributed to support green boating.

The Nature of Cities III     

  • Education initiative targeting land use decision-makers, key community leaders, developers and realtors in the Georgia Basin.

Township of Langley: Water Wise Project     

  • Educational program for residents of the Brookswood Aquifer in Langley.

Urban Development Institute: Water Balance Model Seminar      

  • The Urban Development Institute delivered a seminar entitled “Designing by Nature: low cost, fast and easy solutions to site level storm water management”. 

Federation of Bristish Columbia Naturalists: Shoreline Stewardship Support of Municipalities

  • The Federation of British Columbia Naturalists designed and delivered workshops and presentations which provided municipal governments with access to stewardship tools.

Federation of Bristish Columbia Naturalists: Shoreline Stewardship Outreach to Land Professionals       

  • Workshops provided stewardship tools and training on shoreline stewardship targeted to land professionals involved in decision making.

Fraser River Estuary Management Program: Habitat Inventory Project  

  • User’s guide to the updated habitat inventory.

Victoria & Esquimalt Environmental Action Program: Harbours Ecological Inventory

  • Victoria & Esquimalt Harbours Environmental Action Program developed an information tool (an ArcIMS Mapping Portal on the Victoria & Esquimalt Harbours Environmental Action Program website) designed to assist with the environmental management of the Victoria and Esquimalt harbours, Portage Inlet, Gorge Waterway and Esquimalt Lagoon and adjacent lands. 

Langley Environmental Partners Society: National Watershed Stewardship Policy Discussion  

  • The Langley Environmental Partners Society developed communications products for the completed National Watershed Stewardship Report.

Federation of British Columbia Naturalists: Shoreline Stewardship Tool Kit Piloting and Dissemination            

  • This project provided tools, case studies and consolidated best practices information about effective management strategies for shoreline properties for audiences of elected officials and land use professionals (including those involved win the development and real estate industries).

Capital Regional District: Harbours Atlas Promotion and Training        

  • The Capital Regional District expanded the usage of the Harbours Atlas tool among decision-makers through educations and training.

Southern Gulf Islands Atlas Web Mount & Outreach          

  • The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society developed a “citizen information system” to address the need for publicly available ecological and cultural information for the Southern Gulf Islands.

Federation of British Columbia Naturalists: Shoreline Stewardship Tool Kit Refinement and Dissemination 2

  • The Federation of British Columbia Naturalists is supporting municipalities in the Georgia Basin in shoreline stewardship.

Evergreen: Nature of Cities Municipal Decision Making Workshop       

  • Workshops targeted at municipalities, as part of the Nature of Cities initiative.

 Galiano Conservancy Association: Community Workshops       

  • The Galiano Conservancy Association, held a series of community workshops in order to develop objectives and recommendations that accurately reflect community views towards maintaining a healthy island ecosystem.

University of British Columbia Sustainability Course        

  • The Resource Management and Environmental Studies Program at the University of British Columbia developed, promoted, and taught a course that addressed cross-border environment and resource management goals and issues.

Eco-Industrial Development Council: Eco-Industrial Networking Roundtable

  • In September, 2004, the Eco-Industrial Development Council planned and delivered a two-day “Eco-Industrial Networking Roundtable”.

The Land Trust Alliance of British Columbia: The Islands in the Salish Sea Mapping Project

  • The Land Trust Alliance of British Columbia produced and published the Islands in the Salish Sea, a unique collaboration involving 17 island communities and 30 artists.

Evergreen: The Nature of Cities II        

  • The Nature of Cities delivered workshops and presentation promoting program and policy tools that improve natural green space protection and restoration by municipalities in the Georgia Basin.

Habitat Acquisition Trust: Urban Forest Stewardship Initiative   

  • The Habitat Acquisition Trust initiated work to secure the retention of treed ecosystems within the Greater Victoria area.

Galiano Conservancy Association: Eco-Cultural Restoration Workshop

  • The Galiano Conservancy Association conducted a three-day workshop (February 14-17, 2005) in the scientific, cultural, and spiritual basis for eco-cultural restoration.  This workshop was geared towards First Nations, rural communities, foresters and biologists.

Green Shore Approach Site Audits      

  • The British Columbia Conservation Foundation engaged developers, planners and local governments in an ongoing dialogue on planning, building and developing coastal shore developments in the Georgia Basin.

Indian Arm Sewage Study            

  • This study investigated aspects of existing and potential future private domestic wastewater discharges to Indian Arm.
